Multibeam Echosounding for Detailed Bathymetry
High-density multibeam echosounder systems emit a swath of acoustic beams to achieve full seafloor coverage with millions of soundings per survey line. This high-density mapping captures fine-scale seafloor features ripples, scour marks, rock outcrops, and man‑made structures to produce precise 3D models of the terrain. Corrections for tides, vessel motion, and sound velocity profiles yield seamless digital terrain models (DTM) with centimeter‑level vertical accuracy. The resulting bathymetric surfaces underpin navigation safety, offshore foundation design, pipeline route engineering, volume calculations for dredging, and monitoring of seabed change over time.
Side-Scan Sonar for Seafloor Characterization
Side-scan sonar systems transmit fan‑shaped acoustic pulses and measure the backscattered intensity to create a continuous, high‑resolution image of the seafloor. This acoustic imaging reveals surface textures (sand waves, ripples, gravel patches, mud flows), dispersed debris, exposed bedrock, and anthropogenic objects such as pipelines, wrecks, or lost equipment. Dual‑frequency operation (typically 100 kHz for range and 400 kHz for detail) balances coverage and resolution. Sub-Bottom Profiling for Sediment Analysis
Penetrating acoustic technology using parametric or chirp sub‑bottom profilers sends low‑frequency pulses into the seabed, where they reflect from boundaries between different sediment layers, bedrock, and buried objects. The recorded profiles visualize geological layers, stratigraphy, paleochannels, faulting, gas‑charged sediments, and sediment thickness below the seabed. Analysis yields acoustic impedance contrasts, layer geometry, and engineering parameters (e.g., shear strength proxies) essential for cable and pipeline burial feasibility, foundation design, geohazard assessment, and aggregate resource exploration. Data is delivered as interpreted cross‑sections, isopach maps, and digital stratigraphic models.
Magnetometer Surveys for Pipeline Detection
Specialized magnetic sensing employs marine magnetometers - towed at a controlled layback behind the survey vessel - to measure deviations in the Earth’s total magnetic field caused by ferrous objects on or beneath the seafloor. The continuous magnetic profile, diurnally corrected and leveled, allows us to locate and map buried cables, pipelines, wellheads, anchors, and unexploded ordnance. Anomaly picking, forward modeling, and gridding produce target coordinates with confidence ellipses, enabling precise route clearance and asset‑integrity verification for marine construction, cable laying, and decommissioning operations.
Current Profiling and Water Column Analysis
Dynamic measurement of water movement is performed using Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP), which record velocity profiles through the water column from vessel‑mounted or bottom‑mounted installations. Simultaneous water‑column backscatter data from multibeam sonar systems images gas seeps, suspended sediment plumes, biological aggregations, and thermohaline structures. This comprehensive analysis characterizes current speed, direction, and shear, quantifies sediment transport during dredging or trenching, detects natural hydrocarbon seeps, and establishes environmental baselines. Results are presented as time‑series plots, current roses, net transport vectors, and volumetric backscatter maps for operational planning and environmental impact assessment.
